More Steelhead Fly Patterns

A selection of old steelhead and Atlantic fly patterns. Should be fun to fly fish all of these on the swing. Sink tip fly line on the Rogue.

Steelhead Fly Patterns

It is fun to go back, rediscover and tie old steelhead flies. I have started with the beginning of the Alphabet and will proceed onwards through Z. If I can find a steelhead fly pattern which name begins with Z?

Coho Fly Patterns

I’ve been tying coho salmon fly patterns. Never caught a coho in the Rogue River with a pattern other than a Midnight Fire Carpetbagger which is not a particularly thin fly. I’ve surmised that most successful coho flies are pretty thin with sparse application of material. Color are green, blue and maybe a little red. Silver tinsel and even silver hooks are good choices when tying coho fly patterns.

The Coronation Fly I found in an old fly tying book published in 1962. Tie Your Own Flies was authored by Roy Patrick. From the very basics of fly tying this small book contains a great amount of fly tying instruction and information. The foreword is by Claude M. Kreider who I remember as a fly fishing author from his books I read in years past. Tie Your Own Flies was a surprising find, and I will be studying the many old tips I find within.
